Calamon...una pequeña historia/ Purple gallinule a .a little story

 

Quizas la mayor densidad de Calamon común de la provincia se alcance en el embalse de Cordobilla en Puente Genil, aqui los gritos un tanto "porcinos" de estas aves llenan el aite de los extensos carrizales y superficies de eneas. La historia de esta ave ligada particularmente a mi vida como pajarero , pasa por evolucionar desde números que lo acercaban a la extinción hasta el dia de hoy donde es habitual podertelo encontrar.

Recuerdo aquellos dias de principios de los años 80 cuando miraba ensimismado las ilustraciones en la guía y sinceramente pensaba que nunca llegaría a observar a tan hermoso pájaro pues el riesgo de extinción como digo lo llevo a mantener sus últimas poblaciones en Doñana y su futuro no era nada halagueño.

De repente un día observamos uno en unas antiguas graveras que hoy no existen en el Arenal, (recinto Ferial de Córdoba hoy en día), resultaba increible pero alli estaba el Gallo azul con el que tanto soñé. Estoy seguro que mucha de la gente que hoy lo fotografía u observa no conocen del frágil escalón que separó a esta especie de su extinción.

Perhaps the greatest density Purple gallinule in the province is reached in the Cordobilla reservoir in Puente Genil, here the somewhat "piglike" cries of these birds fill the air of the extensive reedbeds and surfaces of eneas. The history of this bird, linked particularly to my life as a birdwatcher, goes through evolving from numbers that brought it closer to extinction until today where it is common to find it.

I remember those days in the early 80s when I was absorbed in looking at the illustrations in the guide and honestly thought that I would never get to observe such a beautiful bird because the risk of extinction, as I say, led it to maintain its last populations in Doñana and its future was not nothing flattering.

Suddenly one day we saw one in some old gravel pits that do not exist today in the Arenal, (Córdoba Fairground today), it was incredible but there was the blue Rooster that I dreamed of so much. I am sure that many of the people who photograph or observe it today do not know about the fragile step that separated this species from its extinction.
